Briyan Frederick: piano, guitars, synthesizer, drums, bass, vocals

This song made its start long ago on a Tascam 4-track cassette recorder and those tracks form the basis of this recording from which I layered new recordings of all of the instruments.

Or something like that.

I’m not sure when I did this. It’s dated in 2020, but I don’t really recall doing that in the 200 West duplex in Salt Lake City. It’s not really conducive to drums with a dog living next door; and neighbors, of course.

Anyway, this song has been through several recordings. I can hear the original Roland 808 drum machine hats tapping through the real drums I put on later. It’s not perfect, but maybe gives it some mental teetering that works, I hope. The piano is a new addition from the original, along with the harmony vocal.

Lyric

I tried to buy a ticket
Destination: far away
Anywhere but here
I’ve got to get away from here

I’m so tired of my frozen heart
And these empty hands
And all that I can think to do
Is run away from here

Oh, oh, oh
We hide ourselves away
Oh, oh, oh
We hide ourselves away

I close my eyes and I’m afraid
I’d look around, but there ain’t nothing here
And nothing I can say
To help relieve this tension and set my spirit free
What can I do, what can I be
When what I see ain’t me?

Oh, oh, oh
We hide ourselves away
Oh, oh, oh
We hide ourselves away

I’ve got something deep inside my heart
Something pounding, pounding, pounding
Pounding at the walls
That keep me in the dark
But I’ve got nothing to ease the pain
No remedy for injustice
‘Cos resignation is my name

Oh, oh, oh
We hide ourselves away
Oh, oh, oh
We hide ourselves away

Oh, oh, oh
We hide ourselves away
Oh, oh, oh
We hide ourselves away
